The heart has 4 chambers, the upper chambers are known as atria and the lower chambers are known as ventricles. Heart muscles contract and pump blood rough the heart to the lungs and the rest of the body due to natural electrical system of the body. In exercise EKG, the electrical activity of the heart is translated into line tracing on paper.
The spikes and dips in the tracings are known as the waves. The resting EKG is done before the exercise EKG. Both results are compared to each other. Sometimes, resting EKG may show the heart problems, which may prove harmful during exercise EKG.
A small metal discs are placed to the areas of your arm and leg, after shaving and cleaning that area. Electrodes are hooked to a machine to trace your heart activity on the paper. An elastic band will be loosely wrapped to the chest to keep the electrodes from falling during exercise. Blood pressure cuff will be wrapped to your upper arm to check your blood pressure after every few minutes.
You have to walk on the treadmill or pedal a stationary bicycle. The stages in the test are each for 3 minutes. After each stage resistance of the treadmill or the speed of the bicycle is increased. Heart rate and EKG will be recorded continuously. Blood pressure is measured during second minute of each stage. If the readings are too high or too slow, then the blood pressure is measured more frequently.
The test continues till you feel to stop or you develop the symptoms like irregular heart beats or your blood pressure drops below your resting level. The entire test takes 15-30 minutes.
