This research says that a patient has an early warning of stroke if hypertensive retinopathy is diagnosed. In this certain condition, the retina’s blood vessels whether it is narrow or balloon becomes swollen.

One of the major causes of high blood pressure is the loss of eyesight. This might be the reason why an Ophthalmologist can determine a high blood pressure on his patients. Trained ophthalmologist especially those who have an eye to high blood pressure disease can find out if he needs to warn his patients of this disease. Actually, if hypertensive retinopathy is being diagnosed by your Ophthalmologist, he will notice that there is a leak of fluid from the blood vessels. They call this as Retinal Vein Occlusion. Patients who were detected being in this situation may have blurred vision if the fluid increases in the Macula. It is the part of the retina for vision detail. If there is narrowing of blood vessels, it can also be detected through the use of ophthalmoscope.

Other findings were done back in year 2004. The research reported that signs of high blood pressure can also be seen in the arterioles. This is the tiny arteries that supply blood to the retina. The co-author of the said study said these tiny vessels appear to be thinner before high blood pressure occurs. The examination of the retina can detect earlier indications of serious hypertension rather than mild hypertension. This way, early warning and precautionary steps can be done. It is good to know that there are some branches of science that can identify this kind of disease. Those people who are seeing their ophthalmologist can ask them to check if they have signs of high blood pressure.
