High Blood Pressure Major Symptoms

Blood in the body carries oxygen and other major nutrients to all parts of the body. The blood passes through arteries due to the pumping action of the heart. This makes the blood pressure in the body.

The force exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels when it is passing through them is known as blood pressure. When there is high blood pressure the arteries lose their flexibility and become stiff.

The major symptoms of the high blood pressure are

Headaches

Vision problems

Black outs.

The major causes of the high blood pressure are

Changes in lifestyle

Being overweight

Lack of physical activity

Improper meals

The main cause of High blood pressure is Hypertension

The normal blood pressure range is 120/80mm of Hg. The blood pressure in the range 120/80 to 139/89 is known as pre hyper tension range. The blood pressure range above 140/90 is normally known as high blood pressure.

Here there are two figures to note the Blood pressure of a person. The first figure is known as systolic pressure and the second figure is known as diastolic pressure. The top figure denotes the pressure in the arteries as the blood is pumped when the heart contracts.

The lowest pressure in the blood vessels corresponds to diastolic pressure.

The major complications of high blood pressure are heart diseases, kidney diseases, rigidness in arteries and stroke.

To maintain the blood pressure in the normal range the following thing are to be done.

Stop smoking

Diet should be low in cholesterol content and salt content

Avoid alcohol consumption

Exercise should be done moderately on daily basis

Maintaining the weight

Most of the times the symptoms of the high blood pressure go unnoticed the only best way to know the high blood pressure are to get tested.

High blood pressure in ignored cases leads to life threatening complications. High blood pressure in a person for a longer tenure causes atherosclerosis where the arteries become hard and fats are deposited in the arteries.

Higher blood pressure people may have chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and symptoms which corresponds to heart diseases. Due to hyper tension the heart work more and the muscles of heart enlarge and cause inefficient pumping of blood.

High Blood Pressure Or Hypertension

Common Characteristics

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often referred to as “the silent disease” because it has no symptoms until it reaches an advanced state. Very often, it is detected during a routine doctor’s visit or high blood pressure screening program. Even then, several measurements may be needed to make a definite diagnosis of hypertension, which is defined as blood pressure that is persistently elevated over what is considered normal.

Blood pressure is the force that is exerted by the blood against the vessel walls. It is measured by using a simple instrument called a sphygmomanometer, which consists of an inflatable cuff that goes around the upper arm and a column of mercury or a pressure dial. When the cuff is inflated, it tightens around the arm and momentarily blocks the flow of blood through the main artery of the arm. As the cuff is slowly released, the person taking the blood pressure uses a stethoscope to listen to the returning blood flow. One sound signals the maximum force that occurs with the heartbeat. This is the systolic pressure, the higher of the two numbers in a blood pressure reading. The second or lower number, referred to as the diastolic pressure, reflects the lowest amount of pressure, which occurs between heartbeats.

Everyone’s blood pressure varies during the course of a day. As would be expected, it is usually lower when resting or engaged in quiet activities, and it may spurt up during a sudden burst of activity, such as running to catch a bus or exercising. Age also affects blood pressure; it is geerally lower in children and gradually rises as we grow older. Although there is some disagreement over how high is to high, the average normal blood pressure for healthy children is about 90/60, while the normal adult average ranges from 100/85 to 135/90. A diastolic pressure over 95 in an otherwise healthy adult is regarded as suspiciously high and a reading of 140/100 usually would be diagnosed as hypertension that should be treated. Many experts feel that any diastolic pressure that is consistently over 95 should be treated.

Causes of Hypertension

It is estimated that more than 35 million Americans have hypertension. In the large majority of cases, the cause of the high pressure is unknown. Doctors refer to this most common form of the disease as primary or essential hypertension. There are some unusual instances, however, in which the high blood pressure may be caused by kidney disease, tumor or some other identifiable cause. This is known as secondary hypertension, and treating the underlying cause usually will cure the high blood pressure.

While the cause of primary hypertension is unknown, a number of factors appear to increase the risk of developing it. These include a family history of high blood pressure or strokes at an early age, cigarette smoking, obesity and excessive salt intake. Altering or avoiding these risk factors will not necessarily prevent hypertension, but all are thought to play some role. Cutting salt intake, stopping smoking or losing weight may be sufficient to prevent borderline high blood pressure from developing into frank hypertension. This is particularly true for adolescents or young adults whose blood pressures may be in the higher end of the normal range.

Treatment of Hypertension

Over the last few years, dozens of highly effective antihypertensive drugs have been developed that have truly revolutionized the treatment of this disease. At one time, the only treatments available for high blood pressure were surgery, which was not very effective, or an extreme restriction of salt intake, which in some cases meant living on a diet of mostly fruit and rice. Now most cases of hypertension can be brought under control with drugs, which may be prescribed singly or in combination.

There are three major categories of antihypertensive drugs:

Diuretics, “water pills,” which rid the body of excessive salt and reduce the volume of blood that must be pumped through narrow blood vessels, relieving some of the pressure on them.
Beta blockers and other agents, which act on the nervous system to stem the outflow of impulses from the brain that cause blood vessels to constrict or work elsewhere to block their effect.
Vasodilators, which act directly on the muscles in the blood vessel walls, allowing them to relax and expand, or “dilate.”

In addition, anew class of drugs, known as reninaxis blockers, has recently become available that interferes with the formation of a powerful vessel-constricting substance in the body and also with the action of the hormone aldosterone, which causes the body to retain salt and water.

Since there are many antihypertensive drugs and combinations, an effective treatment that lowers blood pressure with a minimum of

Diets for High Blood Pressure – Flavor You Can Enjoy

All too often people are set back by the word diet because they automatically think it means no flavor. This could actually be very true, but it doesn’t have to be. Who said diets for high blood pressure have to be bland? Be creative and you will be surprised at what flavors you can find.

Here are a two recipes that are bursting with flavor and perfect for diets for high blood pressure.

Chicken and Orange Salad

You will need about 35-40 minutes to prepare the recipe and cook it. Generally this recipe serves 4, but not in my house. It is one of the favorites that even the children enjoy. That alone should tell you a lot about the flavor.

You will need:

6 tsp olive oil (extra virgin & divided)
1 tsp kosher salt (divided)
1 tsp 5 spice powder
½ tsp black pepper (freshly ground)
1 lb. chicken breast (boneless & skinless)
½ c red onion (thinly sliced)
12 c salad greens
3 medium oranges
1 red pepper ( thin strips)
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
3 tbsp cider vinegar

Once you gather your ingredients you should preheat your oven to 450°.

Then you should mix the 5 spice powder, 1 tsp olive oil, ½ tsp pepper and ½ tsp salt in a small mixing bowl.

Take this mixture and rub it all over both sides of your chicken breast.
Next you need to put 1 tsp olive oil in a skillet that can go into the oven and begin heating the oil.

Add the chicken to the warm oil.

Cook the chicken on both sides for about 5 minutes each side. It should be completely cooked and browned on both sides.

Roast the chicken in the same pan in your oven for 8 minutes.

Remove the chicken from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 minutes or so.

You will now need to peel the oranges (2) and break them into the segments. You should do this over a bowl so you can save the juice from the oranges.

Add the onion, red pepper and greens to the bowl with the oranges.

Now you can add the remaining orange to the bowl and mix well with the remaining ingredients.

Finally, slice the chicken into strips and add onto the top pf the salad and enjoy.

The next recipe is for a dessert that everyone can love. For a quick and healthy snack in under ten minutes, try a raspberry-pineapple parfait.

You will need:

½ pt raspberries (fresh)
2 8 oz non-fat peach yogurt
1 ½ c pineapple (frozen, fresh or canned) chunks

All you need to do is take 4 containers add a little yogurt to the bottom.

Next add a little fruit.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the cups are full.

Put your feet up and enjoy a tasty treat that fits into all diets for high blood pressure.

Time to Control High Blood Pressure through a Diet that Cuts Down on Salt

Want a healthier option on the dining table? You may want to cut down on salt intake. The higher the salt content of the food that you serve on your table, then the higher the probability that you are undermining the health of your heart! So starting now, you need to start understanding what you are putting into your mouth and you should now make the effort to control high blood pressure. Meaning, the diet that you choose should be free from too much salt so that you can give your heart a break.

You need to know what a high salt content is and the low salt content in order to control high blood pressure. Diet of your choice should have food items that that boast of 0.3 grams of salt or less for every 100 gram. The only way for you to know this is to check out the informational and the nutritional labels which can be seen at the back of the packages. In contrast, avoid food items with high salt content as a way to control high blood pressure. The diet should not include food items and finger foods that contains more than 1.5 gram of salt per 100 grams. Just to give you an idea, here are some food items that are rich in salt or sodium.

Foods that are made with seasoned crumbs
Cheese sauce
Macaroni and cheese
Cottage cheese
Cheeseburgers (See how cheese figure prominently in the list of food rich in salt)
Ready to serve spaghetti sauce
Pizza
Hamburgers
Potato chips and other snacks and a number of other processed food items

These are basically the food items that contain too much salt- more than 400 mg of salt per serving! Now that you know these things, it is just right to avoid these in order to control high blood pressure. The diet that you should follow should consider throwing all these food items altogether or if you find it hard to that that then you can reduce its consumption. That is one way to control high blood pressure. And your chosen diet should be strongly enforced and you should not give in to the temptations of salty yet delicious food items.

There are also a number of strategies that you can use when you want to control high blood pressure. Your diet should be properly monitored at home, and that can be done by not using too much salt when cooking. Control the amount of salt being introduced in the household. Also use other options when cooking dishes. That instead of salt, you can use other flavorings like herbs, garlic and chili. We all know that it’s hard to instantaneously remove salt from our diet. But if you do that slowly but surely, then your family’s taste buds can be accustomed to the change. And in just a few weeks, they will not even realize that what they are eating are food items that are less in salt yet these are the foods that lower blood pressure.

Sometimes Natural Treatments For High Blood Pressure Are Enough

Millions of people all over the United States are currently taking some kind of prescription medication to treat high blood pressure. They are taking the medication to lower their blood pressure because hypertension can lead to serious and potentially fatal health conditions such as cardio vascular problems, heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

Although these prescription medications are often necessary this is not always the case. A person with mild to moderate hypertension can often get well again using natural treatments for high blood pressure.

Amend Your Diet and Lifestyle

What causes a person to have elevated systolic and diastolic blood pressure? There are many lifestyle factors that can exacerbate hypertension. Those who are significantly overweight and lead a sedentary life style are more likely to develop hypertension than active individuals with a healthy body mass index.

People who smoke, drink too much alcohol and eat too many foods that are high in protein, salt and fat are also more likely to have high blood pressure. The same applies to people who have a highly stressful job.

It makes logical sense that the best natural treatments for high blood pressure involve correcting or eliminating the causes. For instance, regular cardio vascular exercise and weight loss are two most important natural treatments for high blood pressure.

It is also wise to eat more healthy whole foods, reduce your intake of salt and alcohol and stop using nicotine products. The reduction of stress is an effective natural treatment for high blood pressure too. This could involve working less hours or finding an outlet such as yoga or meditation.

Foods Herbs and Supplements

It is probable that you have some natural treatments for high blood pressure in your refrigerator or kitchen cabinets and if not you can easily purchase them at your local grocery store. Regularly eating foods such as garlic, mung beans, turnips, honey, oats, goat milk, broccoli, spinach and whole grains can do a great deal to lower blood pressure levels. In general eating more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins is advised for people with hypertension.

Certain vitamins, minerals and supplements are natural treatments for blood pressure too. There are also some herbal treatments for high blood pressure. Potassium, magnesium, calcium, L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10, omega 3 fatty acids, taurine and vitamins C and E are all effective in the treatment of high blood pressure.

The same is true of herbs such as hawthorn, valerian, skullcap, olive leaf, ginger root, turmeric and motherwort. Some of these herbs can be used in recipes or drank in a tea. Other herbs such as valerian do not smell or taste very pleasant so must be taken in capsule form.

The Main Signs Of High Blood Pressure

There are some symptoms that may indicate that you have high blood pressure, and may prevent you from having a stroke. So read on, because it can save your life or the life of someone you know.

Some of the typical signs of high blood pressure are headaches, dizziness, beaten about the ears and nose bloodied. However, some people experience a little pain in the back of his head or increased urination.

Despite an increase in the urine can mean that your blood sugar is too high, if you are diabetic. That’s why it’s hard to see the signals. However, if you have diabetes and are experiencing increased urination, and headache, then just check your blood sugar and see if that is the cause. If not, then you can rule out blood sugar, and whether they have high blood pressure.

Add salt to your diet can also inflate your risk of blood pressure. Having too much salt in your diet can increase blood pressure. Talk to your doctor if you need to reduce their salt intake.

Nevertheless, if you must reduce the salt, you can use many other herbs instead of salt. Garlic, scallions, and onions are good alternatives. Reduce the bar is not too bad, just think of the alternative.

Effective means of Controlling High Blood Pressure

EFFECTIVE METHODS OF CONTROLLING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure, or the hypertension, as it is commonly named, is a condition that can affect us without even knowing its specific symptoms, because there are none. The silent killer can be controlled with the proper medicated treatment and by following the doctor advises. The first thing you have to do after you have been diagnosed with hypertension, is to be aware and to learn how to live with it, because the faster you take some measures, the faster you can stop it from threatening your life.

Being a chronic disease, there is nothing yet that can cure it. We can only try to ameliorate it and to control it by making drastic changes in our lives. Begin with changing the way you eat, change the lifestyle you have and make sure you follow the medicated treatment prescribed by your doctor: these are the right steps towards healing hypertension.

Hypertension can lead to major breakdowns of our body’s systems if we do not take the right measures and the consequences are very serious: complicated heart attacks, strokes or the failure of your kidneys.

This article will provide you with a simple 3-steps program that can help you reduce and regulate your high blood pressure and prevent it from taking over your life.

First Step

Eating healthy might seem easy for someone who hasn’t tried it yet. It involves changing your whole way of life and you must forget and put away your old eating habits and apply the new rules of healthy eating. You can begin with a small step, like reducing the quantity of salt you used to prepare the meals. A higher quantity of salt can produce edema, the retention of water. Normally, the water from our body must be eliminated through the urine. The salt interferes in the process and a big part of the water that should be eliminated is blocked within our bodies, creating excess. This will cause a pressure on the walls of the blood vessels, the main reason for the occurrence of hypertension.

If you feel you can’t live without salt, you can replace it with salt substitutes or tasty combinations of other seasonings. The taste of the food might not be the same as before, but your hypertension will slowly lose its power.

Changing the way you eat and the things you eat, will determine you to begin lose the excess of weight too. It is a common fact that hypertension is caused by obesity, by the fat accumulated in our body which thickens the walls of the blood vessels and increases the blood pressure as a consequence.

To guide the people in finding the right way to control hypertension through healthy eating, in 1997, the Journal of Medicine from New England published a work that was lately approved by the US government as an excellent method to prevent hypertension. This amazing writing was the DASH diet, which means Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension. This is a diet based on healthy food, tasty and beneficial for our body too, including all the proteins, vitamins, fibers and minerals necessary to our body.

The Second Step

If you are a smoker or you are used to having more than a couple of drinks daily, you might take a minute and think about how this affects your health. It is hard to leave behind those nasty habits, and the best way to do it isn’t to go through it by yourself. You will not make it. Search for advice and counselling in your personal physician and you will have professional support while you will improve your life

The Last Step

A sedentary way of life will certainly not help you in reducing the risqu of hypertension. Our busy schedules don’t leave us much choice when it comes to our free time. We prefer to relax and watch a movie instead of exercising our bodies. Do not worry; you do not have to spend hours at the gym. Ten minutes a day can work wonders on your blood circulation, by reducing the negative effect of hypertension on our bodies.

There is the case though, when we inherit hypertension. At the periodic check-up, tell your doctor if you ever had a history of hypertension in your family; it is possible that you might have it too. The only thing you can do is to protect yourself by avoiding the things that allow the hypertension to become serious in the first place. There are also drugs included in the category of antihypertensive; not every one of them might work for your type of body, and you will have to try a whole list of drugs until you find the one that works on your hypertension. Pay attention, though! If you take the drugs and still go on with your old lifestyle, do not expect any results! The right combination of hypertension inhibitors includes: healthy food, exercises and a healthy way of life (no cigarettes or alcohol).

High Blood Pressure and Exercise. How safe is it

Oftentimes we are concerned with the feasibility of exercising when suffering from an ailment. For patients of high blood pressure (hypertension) this is of even greater concern, with questions surrounding their body’s ability to endure the rigors of this increased activity and the wisdom of subjecting it to this additional pressure. This need not be of concern. In fact if you’re suffering from high blood pressure, moderate to medium exercise can be one of the most effective ways of controlling it. Consider that the heart is a muscle and similar to all other muscles, it maintains or increases strength with regular activity and loses its elasticity with inactivity and age. Exercise not only improves your cardiovascular system but can help in lowering your cholesterol and maintaining a healthy body weight, both of which are contributors to hypertension.

Although it is unclear as to exactly how exercise contributes to a lowering of high blood pressure, one of the prevailing theories is that exercise (aerobic) reduces insulin and insulin resistance, two of the factors associated with the development of hypertension. It’s also undeniable that regular physical activity strengthens the heart, the stronger the heart the lower the amount of effort needed to pump blood thus decreasing the strain on your arteries and lowering your blood pressure. Research has continuously shown that cardiovascular diseases are more prevalent among those individuals who are least fit, with hypertension being 30% to 50% more likely to occur.

Exercise programs are slotted into two distinct categories: Aerobic and Anaerobic. Aerobic exercise strengthens and enlarges the heart muscle along with the muscles of the respiratory system. The end result being that your cardiovascular system is strengthened, while your stamina and overall strength is increased. The decrease in your heart rate will, by extension lead to a decrease in your blood pressure over time. Anaerobic exercise on the other hand is useful in building: strength, muscle mass and speed, while also increasing the metabolic rate and is deemed to be more beneficial to athletes.

All physical activity which increases your heart and breathing rate can be considered aerobic, including such everyday activities as: bicycling, walking, dancing, climbing the stairs, mowing the lawn, raking leaves etc. More formal and structured forms of exercise include: basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis and racquetball among others. These types of activities are suggested for persons who would be more comfortable in participating in team activities or who may benefit from the support and encouragement of others. Yoga, Tai Chi chuan or any other form of martial arts could also be beneficial. For the patients of high blood pressure (hypertension) it’s important to remember that the aim is to participate in moderate forms of exercise. Moderate implies that you must exert yourself a little without getting too out of breath.

Your choice of exercise should be one which you like to do and can be incorporated into your daily routine without too much difficulty. Doing so would insure its longevity. Varying your exercise regimen will also help in breaking the monotony and encourage you to continue. An adequate exercise regimen should consist of at least thirty (30) minutes of exercise three to five times a week, at least every other day. An alternative method as suggested by the Surgeon General is that “all adults should accumulate 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most, if not all days of the week. The key words are “accumulate” and “moderate-intensity.” Accumulate means that you can do 10-15 minutes at a time and repeat that a couple of times throughout the day; for example, 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunch, and 10 minutes around dinner. Moderate intensity is equivalent to feeling “warm and slightly out of breath” when you do it.”

The natural aging process increases the chances of getting high blood pressure but participating in some form of exercise can reduce this risk. A single workout may reduce your blood pressure for the whole day and exercising regularly, consistently keeps the pressure down. It’s a personal choice as to what type of exercise one should follow but whatever type you choose you should first consult your doctor and get his/her recommendations, particularly if you are taking medication for high blood pressure. Self monitoring (heart rate monitor) during exercise is also advised. If there’s discomfort in the chest, jaw or arm or you experience dizziness or severe shortage of breath, stop all exercises immediately and notify your doctor, if these symptoms persist call 911.

The Best Treatment For High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension is a serious medical condition that can kill if left untreated. It is dangerous because it puts excessive pressure on vital organs such as the heart and kidneys. Many people who have died of a stroke, heart attack or kidney failure also had highly elevated systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Have you been diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe hypertension? If so you may be wondering which the best treatment for high blood pressure is. Unfortunately there is no definitive answer to that question because much depends on the actual individual who has hypertension and how high their blood pressure is.

Change Your Ways

One could argue that the best treatments for high blood pressure are diet and exercise. One thing that is certain is that you will need to amend your lifestyle regardless of whether your hypertension is severe, mild or moderate. Eating the right foods, cutting out cigarettes, reducing salt, caffeine and alcohol intake and exercising regularly can do a great deal to lower the blood pressure naturally.

Aim to cut out foods that are high in salt and fat and eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Make sure you get at least half an hour of cardiovascular exercise three times a week and start counting your calories to make sure you are not eating more than you need to. You should also make time to relax so that you avoid becoming too stressed. These high blood pressure home treatments can do a lot to help people with hypertension reverse their problem.

Prescription Medications

If a person has a diastolic reading of more than 100 and systolic measure greater than 160 the best treatment for high blood pressure is prescription medication. Unfortunately if you have severe hypertension diet and exercise alone are not going to be enough to lower your blood pressure.

Prescription medications that are commonly used to treat high blood pressure include ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics, calcium channel blockers and angiotensin-2 receptor antagonists. Some of these prescription medications have potential side effects and you should discuss them with your doctor.

Helpful Herbs and Supplements

People who practice alternative medicine tend to believe that natural herbs and supplements make the best treatments for high blood pressure. Of course they are not the best treatments for high blood pressure for those people whose hypertension is particularly severe.

However, herbs and supplements can be very helpful for those with mild to moderate hypertension. What’s more some of these herbs and supplements can be used in conjunction with prescription medications by people with very high blood pressure.

There are numerous vitamins, minerals and amino acids that help reduce the blood pressure. These include vitamins C and E, potassium, magnesium, calcium, coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, omega 3 fatty acids and taurine. Herbs and spices such as garlic, ginger root, turmeric, ginkgo biloba, olive leaf, lemon balm, valerian, hawthorn berry and motherwort are also effective hypertension treatments.

How You can Prevent High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Below are a few Tips on how one can prevent High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). These tips are important and should be followed to the ”T”. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources has recommended these tips.

1. Weight should be maintained at a healthy level. If you are overweight, do exercise and control your calorie intake. Burn more calories than your intake. To maintain your weight, eat calories to the amount that you burn.

2. Diet should contain fruits and vegetables. Low fat dairy products should be preferred and foods containing saturated fats and cholesterol should be avoided.

Examples of such foods that contain saturated fats and triglycerides and are to be avoided are:

Avoid

a) dairy products such as cream, cheese, butter and Ghee.

b) Animal meat such as tallow, lard and fatty meat.

c) Oils such as coconut oil, cotton seed oil and palm oil.

d) Chocolates.

Foods that lower blood pressure

3. Salt intake should be restricted to one teaspoon per day (ie.2400mgm) Avoid taking that extra salt at the table. Fast foods, canned foods or processed containing low sodium content should be preferred.

4. Avoid Smoking: Smoking is the second most common cause , after high blood pressure, in causing a heart attack.

5. Alcohol should be in moderation and restricted to 2 pegs for men and one peg for women.

6. Exercise for about 20 to 30 minutes and can be in the form of a brisk walk or cycling or aerobics or some such exercise that will burn your calories.

7. Check your blood pressure at your physician’s clinic at regular intervals and seek his advice on the status of your health and whether any further preventive steps or medication is required.

8. Alternative medicines such as one small piece of raw garlic can be eaten with dinner. This will also help in keeping your cholesterol levels from rising. A herbal preparation of Hawthorne berries is also very useful.

9. If any medication for hypertension has been ultimately prescribed, take it religiously and follow up with your doctor for regular check ups. Sometimes, a change in the medicine or its dosage may be required.

It is important to remember that complications of hypertension can be lethal. Many a time, hypertension does not show any symptoms and is detected only when lethal complications develop. It is therefore, called “The Silent Killer”.
